  1. Hello, everyone.

I'd like to give my view on Bridge of Spies, a Steven Spielberg movie, which was really thought-provoking.

Tom Hanks - as lawyer James Donovan - had a remarkable acting, needless to say.

During the Cold War, the Soviet Union captures U.S. pilot Francis Gary Powers after shooting down his U-2 spy plane. Sentenced to 10 years in prison, Powers' only hope is New York lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks), recruited by a CIA operative to negotiate his release. Donovan boards a plane to Berlin, hoping to win the young man's freedom through a prisoner exchange. If all goes well, the Russians would get Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), the convicted spy who Donovan defended in court.

What really struck my attention was the sentence stated by the Russian spy Rudolf Abel, everytime Donovan asked him if he was afraid or scared: "would it help?" This made me think about our emotional reaction to problems, which almost always disturbs the process instead of clarifying it. To have cold blood to see to problems is a lesson to be learned.Do you agree with me?

Have you seen this movie? What is your view on the plot and actors' performance?

I believe this movie has great chances to get the Golden Statuette. However, Room (I've also seen it) and the Revenant (with Leo Dicaprio)are great nominees too.

Look forward to reading your reviews too.

  2. Hello,guys.

This is Regiane, a school teacher and Flavia's pre-intermediate student.

To me, The Martian is a good movie because it shows us that with intelligence, high skills and good preparation, it's possible to face difficult situations. In addition, Matt Damon's acting was amazing and Mars photographs were incredible. I imagined the planet the same way it was depicted in the film - with either high or low temperatures.

But, I could have never imagined that the soil was like that. For example, the perfect special effects showing amazing windy storms, when we could see the realism of the soil sandy texture.

Therefore, the astronauts had a hard time on the planet. Matt Damond had an accident and this prevented Damon from having contact with his friends; thus, he was left alone there, because his friends thought he was dead.

When Damon noticed he was alone and seriously injured, and had to undergo an operation himself, my blood ran cold.

From that moment on, he tried to survive the best he could. With his own calculation and knowledge, he could grow his own food. Moreover, he could exercise his intelligence and with his high skills, he could survive for 4 years.

If you haven't seen this film yet, I really recommend it, because the moral lesson I take from this story is that with a rational and intelligent scientific mind, someone can get out of any predicament. Do you agree with me?

    Best,
    Regiane

  3. Hello everyone,

    I'm Danilo.

I did not have the opportunity to watch all the films nominated for the Oscar.

However, I watched “Bridge of Spies” and I really enjoyed it.

From my point of view, the main issue in the film is if Courts can be fair and rule decisions based only on the Law and its principles, avoiding public commotion, political and personal orientation.

Part of the film relates to Mr. Abel’s trial (he was captured and accused of spying for the Russians during the cold war). He was imprisoned under the accusation of espionage, and, as main defense , James Donovan (Tom Hanks) argued that, one of the searches (to gather proofs against the Russian citizen) was performed by CIA without Court authorization.

I’m an employment lawyer (who does not understand Criminal Law); however, in Labor Courts, we have something as the “Fruit of the Poisonous Tree”. This doctrine states that all the evidences that were illegally obtained cannot be used under a Court, which means that all the documents, obtained by the CIA during the search at Mr. Abel’s hotel room, could not be used against him during the trial. According to the movie, the judge did not accept this argument, and, in private conference with James Donovan, he anticipated his will to condemn Mr. Abel, which in the end happened.

Even the Supreme Court (in tight voting 5 against 4) decided against the plaintiff.

The movie gives the impression that the arguments to condemn Mr. Abel were not based on legal opinion, but the general sense that he was guilty. Mr. Abel was condemned even before he got to Court.

As we know, US is very proud to be a free and fair nation, and the movie shows a dark side of some judgment.
